‘I Rise Again’ - Taeyeon, A Concert to be Remembered for its Message

There is something called the Proust Phenomenon. A phenomenon that says past events can be recalled through the sense of smell. Although smells and memories are invisible and cannot be grasped by hand, each of their existence is proven as they summon each other. It’s romantic. On the 21st, Girls’ Generation member Taeyeon’s solo concert [‘s...] occurred at Seoul Jamsil Indoor Stadium.

As Taeyeon prepared for the concert, she created a special scent with a perfumer which was left at various places in the concert hall. It was a scent she thought resembles the atmosphere of the ‘Apostrophe S’ concert. The first scent was sweet and the remnant was clean. Taeyeon laughed and said, “I thought it would be good if you are able to remember this concert even if it's by a scent.”

‘Apostrophe S’ is a concert with the concept of sensibility, and Taeyeon sang songs from her own albums, Girls' Generation songs, and the unreleased songs: ‘Here I Am’, ‘Love You Like Crazy’, ‘Do You Love Me’, and ‘Gravity’. For two days since the 20th, more than 10,000 people gathered at the concert hall.

The feeling of pleasure brought by the show was incredible. It was particularly impressive when she sang the second song ‘I Got Love’. When Taeyeon, who captivates the audience, walked out onto the central stage with confident steps, the beats from the fast drumming and the screams from fans overlapped to create a moment that is movie-like, more than any other moment. And about the ‘Fire’ stage? The tension when the mobile stage lifted up into the air while Taeyeon was singing piteously was more thrilling than any musical equipment or stage production.

Taeyeon has easily jumped over the invisible line separating idols from artists. The ‘Love You Like Crazy’ stage where she performed in the air while hanging onto a rope and sent flying kicks to a male dancer; even though it was experimental, it was also charming for an idol. The bright and cheerful atmosphere of ‘Baram X 3’ was a stage that is commonly anticipated for an idol, but the musical completeness was also high.

I remember the last two Taeyeon concerts. She was a diva at ‘Butterfly Kiss’ in 2016, and she appeared like a warrior at ‘Persona’ last year. And in this concert, Taeyeon was like an emperor. In the concert hall, she looked more radiant, glamorous, honest, and happier than anyone.

The selection of ‘Here I Am’ as the opening song and ‘I’ as the ending song is meaningful. In the first song Taeyeon wanted to prove her existence by saying ‘I Am Here’ and in ‘I’, she declares her soaring by saying ‘I rise again’. Not only for the visual, auditory, and sense of smell, it’s a concert that will also be remembered for its message.
