[IDOLOGY] Taeyeon - 'Why' The 2nd Mini Album Review (2016)

PICK! Mimyo:

If someone let me define Taeyeon's charm, I would call it 'excitement'. It is based on aloofness, like the B-side track 'Good Thing', and it was the 'Why' music video that expressed that narratively. The music video shows being confident and enjoying something on your own, and it ensures the absence of a 'man counterpart' by creating a point of contact with the music video of the pre-release song 'Starlight'. If the previous work ('I') displayed self-consciousness in the vast world, this time, it's a sense of self-reliance of being calm even after excluding others. The press release stating that it's "a vacation leaving the tiring daily life lightly" is overshadowed. That confident image and LDN Noise, who flies away without hesitation, tangle and create wonderful synergy, and that synergy is 'excitingly' disentangled in 'Why''s chorus. As she takes a breath in the bridge, the emotions surge, and her voice seems to stretch through the empty space - it's like a way of dragging instability and beating it as if it's natural. If the previous work was flawless but less 'fun', this time it is indeed interesting to listen to. The smooth expressiveness of vocals in 'Fashion' which is carefree and flashy, 'Hands on Me' is also charming as it slightly moves away from conventional pop through a cliche.
